Abstract
Introduction: Repeated sprint activities (RSA) constitute an important component of training in explosive sports. The present study aimed to investigate the effects of a single repeated-sprint exercise session on performance and inflammatory and anti-inflammatory responses.
Methods: In this quasi-experimental study, 10 semi-professional male sprinters performed six 60-m sprint repetitions with 3-min recovery intervals. Sprint time and rating of perceived exertion (RPE) were recorded for each repetition. Blood samples were collected at baseline, immediately after exercise, and 2 h after exercise to determine the concentrations of IL-6, IL-10, TNF-α, and CRP. Data were analyzed using repeated-measures analysis of variance.
Results: The mean sprint times for the first to sixth repetitions were 7/84 ± 0/22, 7/82 ± 0/22, 7/83 ± 0.19, 7/90 ± 0/22, 8/03 ± 0/09, and 8/17 ± 0/03 s, respectively. Performance did not differ significantly across the first three repetitions (P > 0/05), whereas performance declined significantly during the final repetitions (P ≤ 0/05). IL-6 increased from 1/32 ± 0/19 at baseline to 12/55 ± 1/76 immediately after exercise and 8/42 ± 1/24 pg/mL at 2 h post-exercise. TNF-α increased from 1/51 ± 0/16 to 4/95 ± 0/69 and 4.00 ± 0.54 pg/mL, respectively. IL-10 increased from 2/00 ± 0/23 to 2/33 ± 0/33 and 10/45 ± 1/62 pg/mL, respectively. CRP increased from 0/60 ± 0/15 at baseline to 0/70 ± 0/15 immediately after exercise and 1/22 ± 0/31 mg/L at 2 h post-exercise; the increase in CRP at 2 h was significant (P ≤ 0/05).
Conclusion: A single repeated-sprint exercise session was associated with a decline in performance during the final repetitions and changes in inflammatory and anti-inflammatory markers. However, based on the present findings, a causal relationship between inflammatory changes and functional fatigue cannot be established.
